December 8 King of the Smoker Competition to Feature Legends of Barbecue Vying for $50,000 in Prize Money from Big Poppa Smokers at La Quinta Resort & Club and PGA WEST
Lovers of barbecue are in for a big day, as La Quinta Resort & Club hosts the first invitational King of the Smoker competition, featuring the world’s top pit-masters vying for a never before offered purse of $50,000 in prize money. Open to the public, sponsored by Big Poppa Smokers and sanctioned by the Kansas City Barbecue Society, the championship event will feature not only cooking competition by legends of the smoker but demonstrations, food, music and classes, all centered around the irresistible savor of barbecue. The event is the most prestigious assemblage of past, present and future barbecue masters ever to gather at a single competition.
The battle to win the King of the Smoker title will be waged by 24 champion teams including such luminaries as Johnny Trigg, Chris Lilly, Tuffy Stone and Harry Soo. Widely known to viewers of TV pit and barbecue programs, the renowned teams are scheduled to compete on the resort’s Main Lawn, late Friday night as they begin the hours-long smoking process for their entries to be submitted by noon Saturday. Admission for the event finals and related festivities, are by VIP tickets which provide admission to the private buffett breakfast at 7:30a.m. plus a 20 min. guided tour and discussion of the competing chef's cooking techniques by Big Poppa Smokers; $30.00 per person. General admission is $15.00 per person and opens at 1:30p.m., with ticket holders able to attend celebrity demonstrations, food booths, classes beginning 1:30p.m. and culminating in the naming of the champion "King of the Smoker" at 5p.m.
