29 SUN 8:30pm: The Italian Horror Masters: ARGENTO!
TENEBRE
(Dario Argento/1982)
With Anthony Franciosa and Daria Nicolodi
Director's Cut in Italian in English/Italian with English subtitles
“Terror Beyond Belief...A Descent into Madness”
Narrator: “The impulse had become irresistible. There was only one answer to the fury that tortured him. And so he committed his first act of murder. He had broken the most deep rooted taboo and found not guilt or fear, but freedom. Every humiliation that stood in his way could be swept aside by this simple act of annihilation: murder.”
Franciosa is Peter Neal, an American mystery writer debuting his latest novel in Rome, where a murderer begins stalking him, mimicking the murders in his book. Argento returns to classic giallo form after the supernatural Suspiria, but again adds stylish updating to modernize his own methods of madness. Argento uses a “hands on” method, using his own hands in place of the actor’s, during the murder scenes. Hmmmm...
“Tenebre is a brilliant piece of self-reflexive cinema. It’s no coincidence that Argento’s masterpiece plays out like a cinematic rendition of a Choose Your Own Adventure book.”—Slant Magazine
