Long Time Travelling
WORLD PREMIERE-ORIGINAL SHOW TITLE was The Cool of the Day - -Childhood sweethearts Adam and Rita married shortly after high school and set up housekeeping in the rural town where their family has always lived. Adam followed in his father's footsteps and became a mechanic. Rita gave up her dream of being a teacher because she thought she wanted to stay home and raise a family. They have loved one another as long as they can remember. But the last couple of years have taken a toll on this young couple. Adam has begun to realize that he wants to become a poet but knows that a man of his class and education will be ridiculed for even admitting such a thing. Rita can't seem to get over the death of her father, feels like she has squandered her best qualities and blames no one more than her husband. Except, perhaps, her mother, Chatty, who has been living with them since her husband's death six months ago. Chatty has always been a devout member of the local Holiness church but suddenly she finds herself not believing in much of anything anymore. There's Chatty's son--and Rita's brother--Mason, who believes if someone doesn't think the way he does they must be wrong. Then there is Mason's daughter, Diva, who hates her parents about as much as she hates her name and disrupts everyone's lives in ways they never expected when she moves in with Adam, Rita, and Chatty. All of them must make choices to figure out what their calling is, and what they want to do with their lives to make themselves happy. This is a play about the struggles of being different, being an artist, being someone who decides to change their mind in a place where the acceptable thing to do is to find one way of thinking and remain in it for good. Most of all, it's about the complexities of loving each other for who we are and accepting ourselves.
